'THREE'
First things first, what in my life, my hobbies/interests, have three as a significant number:
my birthday is march 15th 2003, so 03/15/2003
i have three sisters
My mother and one of my sisters also have their birthdays in march (14th,15th and 29th)
I have three main Uni friends (Sam, Lily and imie)
I have three warhammer 40k armys (aeldari, T-sons and Drukhari)
Three main bodies in space are the sun, the moon and the earth
Chronos (titan of time), Has three son, zeus, posiedon and hades.
And three daughters, demeter, hestia and hera
Number three is considered the perfect number to greek mythology, meaning:
past, present, future
birth, life, death
beginning, middle, end
number of the divine.

the three fates also, Clotho, lachesis and atropos
A tory comes to mind in greek mythology following three. the daughter of demeter, persephone, was stolen into the underworld by hades because he was captivated by her beauty. demeter, unable to find her daughter, and being the goddess of the seasons/harvest, stopped blessing the humans with crops. this worrying the other gods tried to convince hades to give back persephone, hades understanding the demand agreed, but before sending her back had her eats seeds of a pomergranate, tieing to the underworld. zeus stepped in an dmade a compromise to them both, with persephone having to be in the underworld for a third of the year and the other two thirds on the suface. as this was happening demeter refused the growth of crops when wthout persephone which is why in greek mythology they have a winter or cold period during the year.
VERY LITERALLY THOUGH WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE NUMBER THREE? well the Greek philosopher, pythagoras, figured that the meanings behind numbers was very significant. reasons being it was the only number which equaled the sum of all numbers below it. also if you take those numbers, so one and two, and them to the number three, you get six. but also if you mulitply all these numbers you get six aswell, something that didnt exist with any other set of numbers. He also thought it was rather special on a conceptual level. like humans having a beginning middle and end, birth life and death.

AN idea i am going to run with is a set of three posters, probably over the course of three weeks (just to keep in theme), of the sun, moon and earth. this ties into my love for astronomy and i can also use some depictions from greek mythology as they are all quite present there aswell. sun, moon and earth, or Stars, moons and planets, tend to bunched together as the three main celestial bodies in space. they are what make up solar systems, galaxies etc.

I want to do the posters in a dark, monotone, retro style. using text and visuals to capture the essence of each subject. they also resemble metal band covers/tour posters. these are some of the references i am using
THE MOON

SElene is the personification of the moon, or the moon incarnate. Also known as MEne, she drives her 'moon' chariot across the sky/heavens. she tends ot be associated with atremis and Hecate, goddess of the hunt and goddess of magic/ the night, as they are all considered lunar goddesses.
'From her immortal head a radiance is shown from heaven and embraces earth; and great is the beauty that ariseth from her shining light. ' - taken from the homeric hymn 32 to selene
Many depictions of selene have her with a crescent moon above or around her head, this is said to be a crown of sorts, this symbol tends to represent fertility and empowerment. and can also have connotations of life and death.
THe moon in general and not from a mythological standpoint is a natural satellite and a general landmark in the sky. the typical thing youll think about when you mention space to someone and the palce of one of the greatest journeys ever recorded, Apollo 11 moon landing of 1969.  taking these into account, the theme for the moon 'poster' will be sort of focused on sapce travel and adventures. constellation maps, satellites, astronauts are some of the first things that come to mind.
THE SUN

Helios is the god personification of the sun, though is also called a titan. He drove a chariot in the sky from east to west daily. In the homeric poems he is known to see and hear everything. From the kidnapping of demeters daughter to the unfaithfullness of aphrodite to hephaestus.
In an astronomical sense the sun is the reason life exists on earth. without heast from the sun the earth would be frozen. without sunlight plants wouldnt be able to grow. the list goes on. but there are also threats that we have to be aware of that come from the sun. for example the greenhouse gases we emit and creating a layer in the earths atmospher which is trpping the suns heat making the planet warmer. Also solar winds from the sun are caused by huge amounts of energy being let out in a sudden burst, these flares can cause the earth to heat up and cut out all power on earth due to disturbance of the ionophere. Again taking all these into account for the posters, the sun is not only helping us but can also negatively effect our lives. so i want the poster to seem friendly but also have some suspicious aspects that show thats its not only good. like a dead smile and squished plants. also a song i know called 'seasons of the sun' is esentially a song talking about death in a unsettling happy tone, but also has lyrics about (coincidentally) the seasons and the sun, so adding them will cause questions.
THE EARTH

Gaia is the greek goddess of earth. she is one the primodrdial deities, born at the the dawn of creation.
Gaia was a rebal one might say, birthing creatures for the sake of overthrowing other gods. she would side with zeus the war again cronos. and then gain conflict with zeus because he binded her other son tartaros.
One of the main focuses and subjects i want to keep clear in the poster of earth is the 'keeping green' and global warming. its the first thing comes to my mind when talking about the earth in general and i feel as if it suits the task.
ONTO THE THEME AND STYLE
So originally i wrote about doing a dark retro style like the posters i showed further up, but i have changed my mind. purely becuase of the time restraint and the style of those kind of posters, i will have to create a lot of assets myself and that will take up too much time. so instead i have opted for a (still retro/old cartoon style) colouring book theme. a lot of hippie/bohemian ish styling, with the colour etc. Also i have challenged myself to not redraw lines and keep it as loose as i can and be happy with.

one thing i found out whilst researching nostalgia and retro themes and such, is that the word 'nostalgia (nostalgic) used to be a potentially life threatening medical condition meaning homesickness. it is quite similar to the meaning now but way more severe. now its more about just missing the things from the past. anyways, i have done a deep dive into the 1940s, 50s and 60s, looking into things that are popular, trends, styles etc.
The shifts

there was a rather long shift from the 1940s, to 1950s, and it happen between the end of ww2 and mid 1950s. its the era rock and roll music started to become popular with buddy holly, elvis presely and bunch of groups or bands rising to fame. Also a lot of things aethetically changed, like fashion and technology.
the shift from the 1950s to 1960s was more to do with the economy as countries started to recover from the war. there was a lot more consumerism and along with that a bit of optimism for the world. but also the 1960s is known to have a wave of drug use and protests.

style and aesthetics
the retro aesthetic can be used to describe things fromm all the way in the 1960s, whilst the term wasnt used until the early 1970s, the meaning of the word, to follow a style from the recent past, makes this make sense.
mickey mouse was one of the most popular cartoons in the 1950s
. most likely due to its signiture style and look of all the characters. popeye was also created in a very similar time but was published as a comic in the thimble theatre, rather then a cartoon. mickey mouse cartoon style was know as an inkblot cartoon, which is what i have tried to imitate in my pieces (only on the characters). it is also known as rubber hose animation as most of the body parts of these characters where imitating rubber tubing and had no knees or elbows

also! ,
hippie/bohemian style did rise in popularity in the later 1960s. which is where i have taken alot of colour inpiration and drawing style.
some playlists ive made using the spotify ai option, pretty fun to see how they turned out. one for retro world, one for sunshine and the 60s and one for moon and space 60s.
FINAL IN COLOUR AND WITHOUT COLOUR
SUmmer project over. i think it was a good learning curve for me compared to 1st year and 2nd year summer projects, as i forced myself to experiment a bit more. i dont usually do digital work or commit to the lines i draw. and the results are something im very happy with (besides the earth poster..). It was nice to see other peoples work too. and how big or small they treated to project. i personally did more on the research side, but the other people in my group more focused on the making side becuase they figured they would get too deep and make work that wasnt as freeing as they want. which i can completely get behind.

I think i will focus on the 1960s - 1980s ish styles i have explored. i think theres a lot i can do with it. especially with the phychadelia and hippie aspects. the colour and patterns i think will synergise with the work i tend to create. also looking inot the music side of those times and how they intereacted with one another.
